Municipal House (Smetana Concert Hall)
Municipal House is the premier Art Nouveau building in Prague.
This stunning construction hosts exhibitions, has a first-class restaurant and boasts the Smetana, one of the two largest concert halls in Prague.
Municipal House is home to the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and classical concerts in the Smetana involve some of the biggest orchestras to play in the city. There are several concert halls in the building, but most concerts performed here at Municipal House are in the Smetana Hall.
Rudolfinum (Dvorák Concert Hall)
The Rudolfinum was built during the years 1876-1884. Once the seat of the state parliament, this magnificent building is home to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Dvorák is the largest concert hall in the building and alongside the Smetana, one of the two largest concert halls in Prague. The Dvorák hosts some of the biggest orchestras in Prague.
While there are several concert halls in the building, all concerts listed on Prague Experience at the Rudolfinum are in the Dvorák Hall.
Klementinum in the Old Town of Prague
The Klementinum is the largest, and one of the most historic complex of buildings in the Old Town of Prague.
Founded in 1232, the Klementinum has enjoyed a rich architectural evolution. Many great astronomers, scientists, musicians and philosophers have worked here, influencing the development of the buildings.
Concerts are held in the historic Mirror Chapel, where Mozart once played the organ. As an added attraction, visitors can tour the Klementinum before the concert.
St. George’s Basilica at Prague Castle
St. George’s Basilica was founded by Prince Vratislav (915-921).
St. George’s is the best preserved Romanesque church in Prague and the oldest church building in the Prague Castle complex.
The distincive Baroque facade that we enjoy today dates from 1671-1691.
St. George’s Basilica serves as a fine concert hall, a delightful setting for early evening classical concerts.
St. Nicholas Church at the Old Town Square in Prague
Beautiful St. Nicholas Church dominates one corner of the Old Town Square. For many visitors to Prague, this will be the most impressive church they will remember.
Designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, St. Nicholas was completed in 1735.
Its lovely white facade is ornately decorated with sculptures by Antonín Braun, and simply gleams, hit by the sun during the day and lit by strong white lights at night.
Spanish Synagogue
The Spanish Synagogue in Prague is often described as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe.
Set in the heart of the Jewish Quarter (Josefov), it is certainly a stunning sight.
This magnificent building forms part of the Jewish Museum, plus is the wonderful setting for early evening classical concerts.
Hybernia Theatre
Hybernia Theatre hosts a varied program of classical music concerts throughout the year.
This modern, air-conditioned building is situated on Republic Square (Namesti Republiky), directly opposite the Municipal House.
Hybernia Theatre re-opened to great applause in 2006, following a major reconstruction which transformed an art gallery, and former customs house, into the largest modern theatre in Prague’s city centre. The comfortable, modern auditorium seats up to 1000 people.
Bertramka Mozart Museum
In 1787, shortly before the premiere of Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre in Prague, Mozart withdrew to Bertramka to finish his opera.
Bertramka was the romantic summer residence of his friends, the Dušeks. In 1791, he returned for his coronation opera on Titus.
From April to September, Bertramka presents classical concerts, some with a “living history” element, where the musical performers re-enact days from the 18th century in period costume.
St. Jilji Church
St. Jilji Church is set amongst the narrow streets and quaint buildings in the heart of the Old Town in Prague. St. Jilji is one of the most impressive churches in the Old Town with origins dating back to the 13th century.
Gothic from the outside and Baroque within, St. Jilji is a large and beautifully crafted church with high ceilings and ornate decorations.
The church organ, dating from 1737, has a unique acoustic quality and has long been a favourite concert instrument for Czech and European organists.
Bethlehem Chapel in the Old Town
Bethlehem Chapel (Betlemska Kaple) sits on lovely Bethlehem Square, in the Old Town in Prague.
The church was founded in 1391 as a holy place where church services could be held in the Czech language.
Jan Hus, the Czech national hero, preached here between 1402-1412. It was then converted into a catholic church by the Jesuits in 1661.
Bethlehem Chapel now hosts classical concerts on Saturday nights.
National Museum
The National Museum in Prague is set in a commanding position at the top of Wenceslas Square, dominating the whole area.
This is the largest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic, and on some evenings, it is the grand setting for classical music performances.
This monumental, neo-renaissance building was designed by Josef Schultz as an architectural symbol of the Czech National Revival.
